School Policies
New students who have already had some French are required to take a placement test.
For students above level A1, the Evalang placement test fees will be credited to your student account if you register to one of our group classes within 6 months after the test.
The Evalang placement test is not refundable.
A one-time registration fee is required of all new students.
Membership is required to register in a group class. The non-refundable membership fee is valid for 12 full months, membership includes borrowing rights to our library (French books, videos) and to our online library (culturetheque) as well as free or discounted admission to leisure activities.
Membership is not required for private classes but will allow for discounts and material borrowing from our libraries.
Please note that a group class is a minimum of three students and a maximum of 8 (sometimes 10) students. Registrations will be accepted in order received when the maximum of students registered is reached the course is declared “closed”. It is still possible to register on a waiting list. In case the minimum student is not met, students already registered will be offered other options. Two students registered may wish to maintain the class for an extra fee (semi-private instruction).
Teaching Material is not included in our tuition. It can be conveniently purchased at our office (email or call us!).
Upon course completion, certificates of attendance may be issued upon request. Tests for level evaluation are available, contact the office for more information.
All students, private or group class, are requested to pay full tuition prior to the first class of the session, either by cash, check, debit card, credit card (visa or Mastercard) , or online payment.
Company paid tuition is possible. An invoice will be issued at time of registration.
A $50 fee will be charged for “non-sufficient funds” checks.
Registrations will be accepted in the order received. Reservation does not guarantee a place in a class, it informs us on your intention to register.
For group classes a $15 discount is available to each student who register during the applicable period of the early bird special.
A student who registers to more than one group classes at the same time will get a 5% discount on the total tuition. (A credit if purchase is done online)
We do not offer a family discount on tuition.
Private classes- discounts are possible with a membership and for packages of 10 or more hours.
The Alliance Française de Detroit/French Institute of Michigan (AFD/FIM) reserves the right to cancel a class due to insufficient registration or teacher unavailability. You will be notified by email and given the option to transfer to another class, receive a credit (valid for one year) or be refunded with no penalties and with registration fees included.
Private tutoring or Private group requires a 24-hour cancellation notice or the fee for the class will be charged.
For in-person classes, in case of difficult road conditions due to weather, the Alliance Francaise de Detroit/French Institute of Michigan may teach one or two classes of a session online. In this case the office will email students in the evening the day before for a morning class or in the morning for an afternoon/evening class. The online class will be via zoom as all our regular virtual classes.
Refund is possible when a student withdraws up to two days BEFORE the class begins. A $15 administrative fee will apply. Alternatively, a 100% credit can apply for future sessions within a year.
Tuitions are not refundable AFTER the beginning of a class session (private or group class) and if more than 20% of the session is completed.
If a student is forced to withdraw from a class for reasons beyond his/her control and less than 20% of the session is completed a refund is possible for the remaining classes less $40 penalty fee. A written request must be addressed to the office to get the refund for the remaining classes.
If a student is forced to withdraw from a class for reasons beyond his/her control a credit may be granted. To get the credit, a written request must be addressed to the office. When received, the credit for the remaining classes less $15 fee to cover for the process, will be issued. Credit is valid 1 year.
Registration and Membership fees are non-refundable.
